Issy, I agree with everything Diane said. Also not helping is that alginate is a base and therefore slippery. Even a two year old can pull his/her hand right out of the parent's grasp when the hands are covered with alginate.
I hate to state the obvious but a comfortable temp can be helpful. The published setting times for alginates is usually 80 degrees F. (27 degrees C.). I would try closer to 90 F. (32 C.) is more comfortable and shortens the setting time.
My guess is that if you have tried several times without success, the child has learned to resist and casting her/his hand with a parent's is at best now problematic, too old to be still and too young to follow directions or be bribed. I like to whisper in a child's ear the is we get this done, mommy has promised to buy him/her a pony on the way home. Most kids would love a pony and the fact that there is no pony later is the mom's problem and not mine!
There is one other thing you might try if you haven't. Put the alginate into a piece of terrycloth such as a washcloth and envelop the baby's hand tightly covering it. Sometime you can keep the baby's hand still long enough to get a good impression. The terry cloth will make a fine mother mold.
But sometimes the are mountains you just can not climb and you may have to wait until the child becomes older. I suggest you get a photo of a pony and keep it where you can find it.
Good luck!
Dave
