Topic Subject : RE: A new topic has been added-Carcinogens in Alginate

Hi

I would like to address the carcinogen-free subject.

Alginates with fillers such as clay do contain minute amounts of free
silica, just as sand, earth and soils do. That is right the beach sand you
walk and lay on contains free silica. Free silica in large enough quantities
such as sand blasting and mining with out a NIOSH mask can cause silicosis.

Even charcoal cooked foods are creating carcinogens. The question remains
how safe do we want to be? We can all be carcinogen free by living in a
bubble.

Dentists have been using alginates daily for over 60 years. There is no
record of silicosis that we are aware of recorded for dentists.

All powders that we mold makers use have a certain degree of hazard. A dust
mask is appropriate when mixing.

There was a study done in Sweden that the binder in plaster bandages
contains carcinogens. The study was done on nurses who set fractures day
after day over many years. They used a great deal of plaster bandages.

Even the plasters we use (Hydrocal, pottery plaster, plaster of Paris, etc.)
contain free silica - yet we know of no plaster craftsman who has become ill
will silicosis.

Moral: As with anything in life, great quantities can be dangerous over time
-- Look at the woman who recently died from ingesting gallons of water.

Warmest regards

Ed McCormick

Carcinogens in Alginate:--

Hi Everyone!

Hope you all are having a great New Year! I have a consultant asking about

carcinogens in alginate. I think silica is the culprit, does anyone here
know
what the dangers/risks are? She was asking for carcinogen free alginate.

Thanks!
