For 18 years, I have used Cellona Brand plaster gauze (originally made by Carapace in Germany), room temperature water and approx 1/4 cup of salt to approx 3 to 4 gallons of water. Never had a problem removing gauze/cotton/alginate composite immediately upon completing the support shell, whether hands, face, head or full torso with no deformation or dimples.
Some geographic regions have mineral contents in tap water that will affect plaster gauze setting strength, of which Vegas is one of those areas. I only use distilled or spring water for all casting projects in the Las Vegas Valley and especially the Dallas Ft Worth area.
Normally cast plaster mixture immediately into alginate and demold 2 hours later. Never had a problem with gauze shell becoming weak. It's all in using a quality plaster gauze, salt, water temperature, correct number of layers of gauze for the support shell, application and learning what works successfully for you.
