Doug
I think I may have deleted one topic but I hope this helps.
All of my body casts end up in cast bronze via ceramic shell molds. After I
do an alginate mold I immediately brush wax into the alginate mold to get my
first wax positive. If I wait to long, as you know, the alginates will start
to loose moisture and shrink. I use an industrial sculpture wax that is very
hard that I then mix with microcrystaline wax to give it flex and workability.
I do all of my wax brushing at one time and overlay each brush stroke with
more hot wax. The wax I use is about 200 degrees F. when I'm brushing, any
colder and I get brush mark separation. If the wax is to hot it will shrink more
and possible distort. I think one major key is using a high quality
pattern/sculpture wax. I purchase my wax from JF Macaughin, in Los Angeles.
