I have been doing it the same way as most, putting my wire into the 2nd and 3rd layers, but being a bit of a pack rat, I had a spool of speaker wire laying around and started using that and I haven't had a problems with it, it's turn out to be a very simple and fast way to do it. I just split the ends a little and loop it around middle of the cast.
I'm not sure of the cost of it.
Also being experienced with picture frame wire I don't even use it on my shadow boxes.
