I still only use plaster bandages but I put a coat of the fast setting plaster over the cotton first just to make sure there's no clumps that could cause a depression in the cast. I pull most of the cotton off once the alginate sets leaving just strands which is plenty strong enough to hold the plaster. It's probably cheaper to use cheese cloth or burlap and plaster to make the support shell but I find the bandages to be easier to work with.

Also, I don't like to build the support shell up too much as all that weight on the model may distort things a bit. Try to keep it light but just strong enough to get your cast.
