Topic Subject : Smoth surface life castings |
|
Usually, I have retained the skin texture in my life castings to emphasize that they are copies of real people. But I also like the effect that results from a smooth surface as in this casting I finished this week. Briefly, this was the process.
The original casting made from an alginate (FiberGel by ArtMolds) was in plain Forton MG. The skin texture was sanded off and the surface was taken to an automotive like finish by repeated sandings and primer coatings.
I made a second mold in tin cured thixotropic silicone rubber allowing me to make additional copies. For strength and low weight, the mother mold was made in Forton MG reenforced with cotton batting with scrim binder.
The final casting shown here is made of FortonMG with copper powder. The surface was so smooth that minimal buffing was required.
The detachable "modesty" ribbon is made from cloth soaked in Forton MG.
If anyone has any questions, please call me at (720) 971-0824.
Also,I have a workshop coming up Aug. 6-10 in which I will be explaining this and a whole lot more.
