Topic Subject : Deathmask...FOR REAL

Dear ALI Members.

Today was an absolute first for me. I was hired to create a sculpture with casts of a man's hand and face. I applied the alginate, cotton and gauze as usual but when I removed the mold from his face, the man was dead. Stone cold dead.

I should point out that he was dead when I started, too. The client was his daughter who made the commission and the job was done at the mortuary. I have done hundreds of casts of hands, bodies, and faces, but never an actual DEATHMASK from a deceased person.

I have to say that it wasn't creepy or weird or scary. My only apprehension about taking the job was the possibility of encountering grieving relatives. Don't get me wrong. They're entitled to their grief. I just wasn't sure how I felt about exposing myself to it.
