Casting With Eyes Wide Open

Mark Alfrey's 'Ultimate Life casting Video' shows a very interesting way of
applying a normal alginate face mold with the eyes wide open.

Now hold on it is not what you think. No special optics needed here as the
eyes are untouched by the alginate. I haven't tried it yet as it appears
that a fairly steady hand is needed. I'll leave that for the youngsters like
Alfrey, a very clever and to me an amazing sculptor.

When I saw his technique I was dumbstruck. Why didn't I think of that I
thought? Such seemingly impossible phenomenon appears so easy when done by
talented artists. In the hands of the skilled it always does.

I am glad to always be learning. Just as I'm glad there are some many
skilled artists here to learn from.

Every once in a while I just need to shout out a big THANK YOU! to you all.

Regards

Ed McCormick

RE: RE: hair encapsulation with Body Double:--
Thanks everyone

The casting was done with the model's eyes closed. Being a sculptor

it was easy for me to sculpt the eye openings.
Even though it can be done, I never recommend casting with eyes open.
You can cast around the opened eyes, but there is always a danger of
poking the model's eyes and this could be a lawsuit!
Using eye sclerals is another way but your still dealing with danger
and would need a licensed optometrist to help you.
Since there is no toxicities in Smooth-On's BodyDouble silicone, I was
able to cast the model with his mouth open. Teeth and inner mouth
detailed where done seperatly using a different technique.
You can't just "jam-in" a glob of silicone or alginate in the mouth
for casting, the whole thing will set-up in a solid and you will never
be able to take it out in one piece, or maybe at your local Hospital
Emergency clinic..!
As for the hair, you just can't attempt casting with silicone unless
you have a lot of experience with the product, same goes with
alginate. Casting hair can be very tricky.
Here is another example of hair casting, this was cast with Alginate.

Re: RE: hair encapsulation with Body Double or Liferite?:--
Hi all, (salut Guy..je suis français)

Thank you all for your advices. Guy, this is wonderful piece ! I am
glad to hear that it is possible to use body double or liferite
without bald cap. Bill raised a very interesting point: how did you do
the open eyes? I have read very different statements: some say that
you HAVE to sculpt the eyes because of the danger of injury using an
"open eyes" technique, some say that you can do an "open eyes"
technique when using alginate (either with the full scleral contact
lenses or the closing/opening eyelids technique). Have you used Body
Double for an "open eyes" technique? Was it with the full scleral
contact lenses? Does it work well ? Thank you. Luc
