Topic Subject : Re: Faux Finishes? |

I have spent a ton of time and $ on testing paint finishes, trying to create the closest to metal look etc. Gesso is a good sealer, but when a client wants to keep the natural stone look, I have a special tinted gesso that I apply, I tint the gesso with acrylic paints, a drop of brown, and charcole and then try to match it to the stone colour which can be a little hard. since gysum are not a true white. I believe in sealing all my work especialy if it is exposed. So I use the tinted gesso and then spray it with a non-yellowing varnish. better for long term like cleaning etc.
For metal faux finishes, I have tried car paint (enamel), acrylic, gilding with metal leaf, liquid leaf, spray metalics, metal waxes, and a combination of some of them together, anything really works, you just got to play around. The attached photo is a pregnancy belly that I did starting with a faux pewter paint on the belly, then I dry brushed liquitex ir silver (tube) then rub n buff silver leaf wax on just the hands and belly button, I then spray varnished it and then touched up the hands again, then varnished it again.
You can also get an interesting finish by spraying colours on top of each other while they are still wet, they kind of melt together, for example spray a gold and then while it is still wet a dark bronze on top of it and you can see the gold shine through. As long as they are the same chemicals.
that's my input, hope it helps.
