Topic Subject : Re: Faux Finishes? |

Chris
All plasters are porous, even the very-hard gypsum cements. So a stain will
penetrate easily. Coffee and tea will give a pleasant warm tint. (Ultracal
is a nasty grey-green color.) Water colors or thinned tempera, clay slip or
plain mud will all work. These are generally flood-coated on, as with a
sponge, then wiped off the higher areas and left in the creases. Regular
plaster has harder and softer patches which take stains in a slightly
blotchy way. This can look pleasant or not.
To do serious faux finishes, normally a plaster primer is applied. Then the
faux finish or automotive spray finish can go on nicely.
By painting the piece with a certain glue, or really any old varnish that
dries slowly, you prep the piece for metal leaf. Don't be scared of these.
Main advice: watch out for unwanted roughness, brushstrokes, dust, etc.
Aesthetically: watch out for finishes that detract from the form you worked
so hard to create. Who wants malachite skin? (That's the green and black
mineral which is a favorite for faux finishes. Looks great on a flat
surface.)
