Topic Subject : Re: Re: Urgent question about cold cast aluminium |
|
Thanks so much Michael and Andrew, and also to Hiram and Philip who replied to me off forum with some great ideas and advice. The problem was avoided in the end as the client fell in love with a cold cast iron sample instead and didn't then want to know about anything else.
One of the suggestions I received was to use cold cast nickel silver, which I didn't realise you could do before. I found one supplier in the UK (Bentley Chemicals) but they haven't been able to provide me with much information about using it. For instance, is it a 'heavy' metal? It's hard to estimate quantities one might need for a project without being familiar with the powder in advance. What I mean to say is aluminium, being a very light metal, if you get a 500g pot that's a lot and goes a long way, but 500g of bronze is a tiny pot that doesn't go far at all as bronze is so much heavier/denser. So does anyone have more familiarity with nickel silver powder and how much you should use for, say, a face cast of an average adult?
I don't need to know in a hurry now, but I would just be interested as the one picture I could find of something that had been made with it on the internet looked so beautiful. It is, however, at least in England, horrifically expensive. Which is another good reason not to buy too much of it if a little goes a long way.
Many thanks again to all who answered.
