I've done that to and you really don't save any money. First off, you are only using 5 lbs of the 18 lb kit (if that is what you buy) to do a front torso for example (they do sell smaller amounts). So you are basically using 5 lbs. of Body Double and plaster bandages. If you do it the other way (like Todd described) you are using the following:
- Alginate
- Plaster Bandages
-Plaster for the cast
- Silicone (although not Body Double, still expensive).
-More Plaster bandages
-More Plaster or whatever material for the final casting
As for doing it at your leasure, you certainly can using the Body Double. You mold once and make as many castings as you like later. I would recommend using a more permanent support material if you plan on doing numerous castings.
I have done it both ways and find using the silicone on the skin faster and easier. Plus, silicone sticks to itself, unlike alginate, so you can keep mixing small batches to create larger molds. Just make sure the model is not alergic. I always keep a small amount in syringes which I dispense, mix and place on the models forearm and lower back to see if there is a reaction.
