Debra,
I agree with Dan...what you a thinking of doing is waaaaaay more complex than a face. If you really want to end up with a clay piece, take an alginate mold and make your primary cast in plaster (most any kind will do) and then make a "negative" in silicone or polyurethane rubber. Then press your clay into the mold (not all that easy either) and let it dry. Good luck...the largest thing I have done in clay was a neck/shoulders/cleavage.....it broke into several pieces while I was pit firing it.
