Re: casting clay:--
Dear Dan
the lady used in starving woman photo was a Morrocan lady the man an
african they were indeed poor people but not starving, this job was dropped
on us very last minute, there was also a baby sculpted ,it was not an
immense amount of work it was very simple some thing that could easily be
done with the right training, sculpting skills were used to reduce body
mass.the breathing man was my co workers idea he had it fixed up inside 1
hour .
I have worked on a few of these produtions now ,the film that followed this
was Beyond borders this was about starving people in Etheopia this time we
decided to lifecast heads hands and feet, the bodies being plastic skeletons
that were sculpted on this worked very well .
As for finding real starving people and lifecasting them .that would be just
plain dangerous the refernce that my team and I looked at was heart breaking
it will be with me all my days these people were beyond the point of return
they had already digested the own stomachs our work on beyond borders was
driven by a passion to show the world how bad these people were suffering
alas most of our work was not shown our work takes us around the world ,my
own origins are African and I feel a great sense of duty in my work and
hope it contributes to the cause in aleaveating some of the sufferring that
these poor people have to endure .the money that was payed to the people on
BLACKHAWK DOWN did indeed give these poor morrocan extras a decent income
the guy was himself a refugee who had fled across africa his whole familey
had been killed yet he had such a noble spirit and a smile that would
gladden any heart.
John

Re: casting clay:--
John-
Thanks- no disrespect intended.
We call oil-based clay "modelling clay" or "plasticine" here.

As for the immense amount of effort put into the starving woman statue --
starving people are very inexpensive and easy to find in the world. Hiring a
few would have given them a decent income for quite a while.
