Topic Subject : Casting in clay questions |
|
Greetings!
I am so pleased to have discovered this forum. I can't get over the internet . .and being able to connect with complete strangers about something I find so intriguing!
I have been doing molds of people's faces using regular hardware plaster for several years. Into this I then press clay. This positive casting I then resculpt into an infinite number of images. I LOVE being able to change the slope of an eyebrow, the expression of the mouth .. . to sculpt the eyes open with any expression I desire. It is just so amazing how many variations can be made within a face that while subtle .. make a HUGE difference. (And from this I know I will NEVER try and sculpt a true likeness of someone from scratch)
But now I crave more options beyond just the front of someone's head. I want to do the WHOLE head, neck and shoulders. Thus .. I am venturing into life casting with alginate. I have been reading and reading .. and have purchased the alginate and plaster bandages.
My problem will come with converting what I get with this process .. into a mold that will work for clay or slip. A fellow on another board recommended that I do a silicone positive of the alginate mold, then do a urethane mold of this. The problem of course with this becomes getting the clay in . .and getting it to dry. .
Alternatively .. . I could make a multipart plaster mold of the silicone positive .. and use this for the clay. Or .. I am even thinking .. why couldn't a person make a multipart plaster mold of the original plaster positive? Lots of mold soap and Vaseline should do the trick would it not?
If anyone could share their experiences in this area with me .. . I would SO appreciate it!
I am including few photos of what I have been doing with the face only molds and castings... can you tell they are all from the same woman's face?
Best wishes Debra Ulrich
