Topic Subject : Re: casting clay

Actually Dan .. I HAVE taken a million classes both at the local community college and at Oregon State University. At the community college level .. they teach mold making of one simple thing .. eg . .no more than 2 parts. I asked .. and none of the teachers there have experience with alginate. The Bronze casting class. ..which I have also taken repeatedly . .. teaches how to make flexible molds . .but only with a substance that can't be used for clay.

At the university .. the profs only want to take that kind of time with their master's level students. .. unless you are doing EXACTLY what they have in mind for a class. Thus I know how to do a multipart plaster mold of a bust I sculpted . .for pouring wax, for doing bronze.

As for pouring slip into a plaster bandage mold and firing .. intriguing idea .. but plaster .. even dry . .. explodes in the kiln .. and makes nice little holes or worse in your . .and other's pieces.

Am I understanding you to say that you are doing your MOLD with plaster . .directly on the person? I considered that option. . .but thought most models wouldn't want to pose for the length of time it takes to put on the dams and do multiple plaster pours. I have never worked with the plaster bandages before .. . just regular plaster. Perhaps that is the answer to making things go faster for the model?

I wouldn't want to make a mold of old raven head .. . I seldom make anything I consider good enough to want several copies of . .that one included. I just like to take molds of the MASTER SCULPTOR'S stuff. . .people .. and then rework that to my heart's content. I am attaching a pic of a clay piece done from a mold of JoAnn.... I used her mold to do Raven head as well.

Thank you again for finding the time to get into this discussion with me.
