Topic Subject : Urgent question about cold cast aluminium |
|
Hi all,
Hope everyone is well and making wonderful work.
Quick but urgent question about cold-casting with aluminium powder (aluminum to those in the US). I've done a few small ones of these over the years, but recently was told by another caster that aluminium cold casts dull (lose their shine) quite quickly. Is this the case? I've not had any complaints, but not had much of a demand for them over time. However, I've got a client coming tomorrow who is asking about it and as the piece is for a very special memorial to a deceased relative, I want to give her all the correct info about all the different options, one of which she's asked for is cold cast aluminium.
Those of you who use it regularly, are you aware of it losing its shine? If so, have you found of a way to combat it? eg...using a particular lacquer (would most appreciate hints and tips from those in the UK as there's no point me coveting some perfect lacquer that's only available in another country that we can't get here). Or do you have any other hints and tips for casting in silvery coloured metals?
I can do real pewter but the client doesn't want the natural pitting that often occurs with pewter. And can do real silver but that might be out of their price range. Any other decent, reliable suggestions before tomorrow morning would be very appreciated.
Best wishes
CJ
