Topic Subject : RE: alginate on face? |
|
Hi Todd. I'm curious what ratio you use to mix your alginate. I have had
success with a runnier mixture because of the time element involved with
alginate. I once cast eight faces in a day for a non profit with a grant to
do lifecast. I had to work fast and so starting at the forehead I let the
alginate run down the face and then did the nose. I used burlap dipped in
plaster over the alginate. The faces turned out pretty well except when the
plaster was not squeeged off enough and so didn't stiffen to support the
alginate. That was the first time I used the burlap in plaster instead of
plaster gauze. The burlap fibers adhered well to the alginate and the
process went well. The other advantage of the runny alginate is that you
can add to it easier than a thicker alginate and it didn't separate. It
gave me a little more time to work on special areas like the nose. I'm with
you on the straws mostly because being under alginate is hard enough without
straws in your nose. I have no problem using my fingers to clear peoples
noses of alginate rather than stopping to get a q-tip while the alginate is
drying. I think having the person blow out is probably the best plan and if
that doesn't clear it, it's probably more sanitary to use a q-tip.
