Messages are numbered sequentially from lower to higher. Please explain off

Could I suggest that the message numbers go the other way eg the very first
message is number one and each subsequent post gets the next number. (As it
is the lastest posted message is always number one.) It would then be
simple to refer back to posts because the number would remain constant.
