Hi fellow ALI members!
I have received a few thoughtful inquiries to my reply to Bob’s ILCMuseum post sent directly to me, but I would like to share my responses with all of you.
First up, if I sound passionate in my reply about lifecasting that is because I truly am. I know that both Ed McCormick and Robert Weeks have done amazing ongoing work to promote lifecasting and each have dedicated over a decade of their lives to do so. I had the pleasure to meet Ed over 10 yrs ago. Without Ed we would have no ALI, we would have no community – a worldwide community where we can all come together to share ideas and to help each other grow as artists and not just technicians. More recently, I also had the pleasure, not only to meet with Bob, but also witness his mega-collection first hand. To say I was awestruck would underestimate what I felt when I came face-to-face with history. Casts that are several hundred yrs old of Popes & Kings, Poets & Artists, Scientists & major Political figures of the past centuries. Where would our world be today without Sir Isaac Newton, and here I held his very cast in my hands. The Hollywood casts of this century were fun to look at, but they all paled when I saw the cast of Abraham Lincoln. Not a death mask, but a life-cast taking just a few short weeks before his assassination. Looking at this life-cast was looking directly into the face of history.
In addition to the Historical and Hollywood galleries, the museum also includes a Nature gallery, a Making a Difference gallery honoring people today who are trying to improve our world, and of course a Fine Art gallery featuring many of our own ALI members. But the most solemn room of all is the Holocaust Gallery devoted to presenting the life masks and interviews of Holocaust Survivors, a twenty-year effort of artist Robert Sutz, who personally video interviewed and made life masks of these Holocaust survivors.
So as you can see, there is a lot here to be passionate about, so again please forgive me if I tend to ramble on.
I would like to repeat Bob’s offer to add YOUR casts to ILCMuseum’s “Virtual Gallery”. Like ALI, this is a free service to promote yourself and your art … and we can all use a little more promotion, can’t we?
Here is a direct link to the page on the website that you'll need.
http://www.ilcmuseum.org/online/gallery-usa.html
At the bottom of this page you'll see -
" To be included in the Virtual Gallery, fellow life casters are welcome to submit a sample of their work by clicking here. "
Remember, this is a free service to help the life casting community.
Lastly, I am not a part of this museum, I am simply a fellow lifecaster who believes and I offer my sincere thanks to both Ed and Bob for all they do.
Happy castin'! ~ Joe Canger
