Topic Subject : Chrome finish

Got my first chrome "plated" life sculpture torso casting finally finished yesterday. Reflects everything around it, the green, e.g. was from the opposite wall. Studio assistant Alie Brandl was holding it for scale but she was not the model for the casting. A CSI agent could probably identify me with a camera in the reflection.

I will be writing an article explaining the process in detail for Sculpture Journal but, for those interested, here is an abbreviated summary.
1. Original impression made in Fibergel alginate by ArtMolds. First positive torso made in plaster.
2. After repairing a few minor flaws, a second mold was made in tin cured silicon rubber.
3. Cast a second positive in plain Forton MG. All the skin texture was sanded off and surface highly polished. Only the nipples were left untouched.
4. A second tin cured silicone rubber mold was made of the now smooth torso. This second mold was taken to a fiberglass manufacturing company and the third and final torso was cast.
5. After several hours of additional preparation by an expert auto painter, was taken to Extreme Chrome in Longmont, Colorado. The “chrome” finish is actually a urethane.similar to the paint on your car. It is a franchised process known as Cosmic Chrome.
