Kevin, while it is not possible for me to know exactly what went wrong with your casting without having been there, my guess is that the dimples were caused with the application of the the plaster bandages. I realize that most life casters use them and with good results. However, if you will read my article in the ALI Library, "An Alternative to Using Plaster Bandages...," I explain a method that pretty well eliminates dimples. I have no problems at all with dimples nor distortion even of soft tissues such as breasts. Please feel free to call me at (720) 971-0824 if I can be of any assistance.
