Kevin -
I had some of the same issues with face casts when I used double-layers of plaster bandage. When the alginate sets, if any "high spots" or "peaks" exist on the surface, they are the areas that are prone to being pressed into the model, ultimately creating a dimpled surface. In my experience this seems to occur only when I try to apply double-layers of plaster bandage when creating the mother mold.
See the attached images of my daughter's face cast - one was from a mold taken using double layers of plaster bandage and the other from single layers of bandages. It is apparent in a few places where the dimpling took place (on a much smaller scale than your torso mold, likely due to the reduced size of the molded area).
I've learned to take my time and put on three single layers rather than two double layers. At least it works well for me. I think Dave has some much better methods, but if you're going to use plaster bandage I think it's better to use single layers.
I like the glossy finish on the cast; how did you do that?
