Hi William,

I did a commission a few years ago with 30 faces. It was indoor, so certainly not what you are looking for in terms of technical data for outdoor casting, but there was a very interesting aspect to the project that I would share.

This commission was for a public Cultural Centre and Museum opening in our small town (about 140,000 people), so the City was looking to fund a public works project that really included the piblic (as there was a lot of public debate about spending these tax-payers' dollars on an art gallery and cultural centre). So, to keep the city engaged, the models who were cast for the project werw all NOMINATED through the local newspapers. We had all the local media spreading the word, and what we were looking for were nominations of people who depicted something that our town, Abbotsford, was all about.

So, hundreds of people wrote essays about their famiy and friends and how these people embodied the epitome of what Abbotsford is. We had everything from the Mayor (who was our mayor for nearly 40 years before retiring that year), to a waitress at a local family restaraunt, farmers, teachers, doctors, firefighters, avid volunteers, children, musicians, artists and so on.... Because we only had funding for 30 faces we got the demographics of each nominee and overlaid that witht the most current census data, for the "Face of Abbotsford" projects not only accurately demonstrates the braod range of people on our town, but is also a great snapshot of the age, race, nationality and socio-economic status of our town, too. We invited each of the Faces to come get cast, and voila! At just 26 years old I have my first piece of public artwork on permanent display in a well regarded art gallery! And to boot, I was paid very well for the work!

In hindsight it's not the most terrific work I could have done - I have logn since developed better techniques for casting the faces and for displaying them, but, the work is well regarded in my town, has helped me get other grants, and most importantly, got me a ton of great press (and business because of it!)...

Happy casting :)
