Topic Subject : Re: Hanging

My method is almost exactly the same as Clay's except for a couple of small differences. for example, I use 1/16th inch braided stainless steel cable. It looks just like the galvanized kind available in every hard wear store. I have to order the stainless but use it because should never as in hundreds of years rust out. It is also incredible strong.

I use the same electrical connectors but until I happened to come across them, I had just cut 1/2 to 3/4 inch (about 2 centimeters) pieces of 1/4 inch copper or aluminum tubbing.

I insert the wire through the connector, make a loop from 1 to 2 inches in diameter (2.5 to 5 centimeters) and push the wire back through the connector. I crimp the connector with a pair pliers.

Most of my castings are in Forton MG which is applied to the inside of the mold in thin layers. Usually after I have added the accelerant and some chopped fiberglass to what will be the third layer, I set aside about a half a cup worth and let it thicken up to the consistency of cool butter. Then I take one of the looped ends, hold it flat against the side of the casting at about mid breast line, and anchor it in place with the Forton MG. If I have done this correctly, the looped end will stay in place while I attach the other end. I then apply a couple more thin layers of Forton MG to the entire casting including the buried loops. I have never had one pull loose. I attach the wire when I an constructing the casting thought it could be done later. Forton MG will bond to itself or other gypsum products even after thew have set-up.

If I were using resin, I would thicken the resin with a filler. If the resin is too runny, you could tip the casting on its side, once that side has gelled, do the other side.

Good luck to you,
Dave
