With the economy in the world today, unless you know someown well enough to take a cheque my recommendations is not to.Even Paypal and credit cards can have the charges reversed.
Its a shame, but cash and certified checks or money oraders, but be careful with those too as they can be forged.
Push forward with you process to serve the papers so you have a legal status established.
