Thank you to everyone who helped me out with my problem. Turns out my mix ratio was incorrect. I used 2 lbs of alginate to 8 lbs of water for this mix and it was perfect for a torso mold. Thick, smooth and not runny.
I practiced on a friend for my trial run. We both cried when I peeled off the alginate. It was beautiful. It has a few holes in it from where I missed spots with the plaster, but the detail is amazing. I've been idolizing work from all of you and didn't really expect to be so proud of my first piece. I am so excited to keep practicing and trying new techniques! I have another casting tomorrow. When I find my other lens, I'll post a photo of the full piece, but for now here's a sneak preview...
