Topic Subject : Re: lumpy alginate |
|
I had a nice talk with Tressa on the phone and it appears to me that she just wasn't mixing the alginate enough. There were two contributing factors, her mixer was only about an inch in diameter and her drill's top speed is only 1,200 R.P.M. I suggested that she get a 2 1/2 to 3 inch mixer and a drill with a top speed of at least 2,000 R.P.M. She could test my hypothesis by just mixing a small sample batch with her old drill and mixer longer and see if she eventually gets the desired smoothness. I am waiting for her to report back.
Another possibility, which in this case is not the culprit, could be the water. I have seen water so hard that alginate just became like cottage cheese and never set up. However Tressa had considered that and had tried distilled water with the same results.
If, in fact, the problem is solved, this is a perfect example of why I like to talk to someone rather than try to carry on a conversation by emails. We can cover so much more material so much more quickly by talking than typing.
Michelle, thank you for the nice words.
Dave
