Ali, I don't for sure understand what you have to work with. It sounds as if you have the thumb but there is a little sliver of plaster missing. If the thumb will fit back into position but you have a gap on part of it, it should be no problem. I would glue the thumb into position using epoxy, super glue, or even Elmer's. Then fill in the gap with spackle and let dry. Clean up the spackle so as to make the joint as invisible as you can and then repaint. The painting is your salvation because it will cover up any differences in colors. If you actually have to reconstruct the thumb, then you obviously have a bigger job and degree of success will depend on how good a sculptor you are.
