Well, I was doing a 2 piece mother mold this morning on top of a silicone mold that I am doing.
I didnt want to use dental plaster as sometimes it is just too fragile--I didnt want to use Forton as the materials can get somewhat expensive when you factor in the shipping and the VF812, and everything needed for that whole system. (Disclaimer-I still completely endorse the use of the Forton MG system, but only for the castings themselves due to expense)
So I went to work and tried something else--I took some of the VF812 and mixed it 50/50% with water to stretch it out. I then used this mixture and added 50-75% of regular PVA glue (Elmers) To this I added straight FGR95 in a 2/1 ratio to the mixture and then the same with Hydrostone.
I mixed this all up and then added some Ammonium Sulfate to quicken the set time. Mixed this all up and started applying it to my mold--Wow--it was great--set up quickly and was actually easy to apply. I let it set up, mixed up another batch with no ammonium sulfate, applied this and then added chopped strand, then added more ammonium sulfate to the rest of what I had mixed up. I applied this and now I am waiting for it all to set completely.
I was able to create a pretty thick mother mold in this manner and very quickly. It was a lot less expensive than using straight Forton and seems to work well. I will know more after I try to de-mold.
A couple of words of caution here--BE CAREFUL WITH THE AMOUNT OF AMMONIUM SULFATE YOU USE--it seems to kick off a lot quicker using this mixture. It does seem to develop some bubbles in the mix but these smooth out when applying. I started with a brush but found that using a gloved hand worked better.
I will post more after I have de-molded and let you all know the results.
So the recipe is:
VF812 1 part
water 1 part
PVA glue 3/4 part
Hydrostone 1 part equal to the total amount of liquids
FGR95 -1 part equal to the total amount of liquids
So here is a sample mixing:
VF812=100grams
water =100grams
PVA glue 75 grams
Total Liquid=275 grams
Hydrostone=275 grams
FGR95=275 grams
ammonium sulfate--just a few splashes--this will take some trial and error.
Total amount of material mixed=825 grams. This would be enough to cover a complete torso completely once over
Working time is only about 3-5 minutes depending on how much Ammonium sulfate you use.
Experiment--Think outside the box--try new stuff, new techniques, new materials or combine existing ones--Just make sure you are aware of all the precautions involved with the materials and if you are in doubt about mixing certain items--CHECK with someone first!!!
Good luck!!
