Clay,
You said that you got a pretty "thick" mother mold. One of the main reasons that I use Forton MG for my mother molds is so that I can male then so thin and light. Using cotton batting with scrim binder allows for molds which are mostly about 1/8th of an inch thick and therefor very easy to handle. If you only used about two pounds of material, it wouldn't seem that the savings could have amounted to much.
