Topic Subject : Re: Re: Mold Locators

Here is a progress picture using the "hot glue" locators. These worked pretty sweet. I dont think I would use Forton to do these as they need to be a bit flexible to be removed. Silicone, hot glue, even a rubber ball cut in half, if it was small enough, etc would work great tho!.

The picture the second half ready to apply the mother mold. You can see where the Hot glue locators were. I used 3 consecutive coats of a quick setting resin and applied chopped strand in the final coat and left it kind of in and out of the resin instead of pressing it all down-( Resin was equal parts A and B with a 3 minute pot life) .

This gave the Forton MG something to adhere to securely. I then built it up to about 1/4-1/2 inch with the Forton MG and let it set up. Came apart like nothing was even holding it together.
I have to give Dave Parvin his Kudos yet again. I ran out of the commercial mold release spray so I made up some of his Vaseline/Naptha mixture, (100 naptha-15 Vaseline but I went 20-25 vaseline) and it worked better than the commercial stuff. I applied it directly to the clay (you have to be careful applying it to the clay as it will stat to dissolve the clay if you get too aggressive applying it.)
When I separated the mold halves, there was much less clay stuck to the side I used this mixture on than the side I used the commercial stuff on. Thanks Dave!!.

If I can offer one word of advice on these types of molds, be sure to look for any undercuts that may cause you problems when removing the Mother mold. If necessary , build these areas up with the clay. You may use a bit more rubber, but it sure will save you headaches down the road.
Ill post more as I progress!!!
