Hello Dave,
thank you for the compliment. The tray was poured with a sturdy rod (branching out left and right) placed into the mold after the first layer of artestone so it won't show on top. I drilled an hole in the finger tip and then I put the rod in place and I balanced the tray out - then I filled the hole in the finger to hold the rod tightly. The piece can now be disassembled for safe journeys 'around the world' :-)
I always rotate critical molds to avoid - usually only lessen - air traps of this kind like finger tips BUT even if there builds up a thin coat of plaster it crumbles into pieces when demolding.
A centrifuge would - I believe ! - totally eliminate any air in a finger tip curled upwards.....
Unfortunately in Germany all washing machines run vertically - I wouldn't hesitate to try my luck in a washing machine drum which spins horizontally.
Alles Gute,
Adele
