I once made a 12" by 12" by 1/2" flat mold of a piece of tile. I scattered baking soda on the surface which was an idea I got from Hiram Ball. I mixed some light colored Forton MG. to which I suspect I added powdered or crushed limestone (Athletic Field Marker or Pool Mix). I took a small amount and darkened it with concrete dye and dribbled it around the lighter solution. Then I stirred it once and and and puored it into the flat mold. The result was a very realistic fake marble "tile." The bubbles of CO2 from the baking soda caused a what I though were really appealing voids in the surface. When I get to the studio, I will see if I still have a sample and if I do,I will try to post a photo.
I never tried this with a life casting because it seemed to me the there were two problems. First, the baking soda would not stick to the vertical sides of the mold. Also painting in the surface layer of the two colored Forton MG would tend to blend the two colors, at least I thought so, and you would not get the desired marble effect. It is probably worth some additional experimentation.
