Hi Justine,
I have done something like this. You could use clay to make a mould but I wanted the same detail as my other casts so wanted to use alginate. I filled a shallow rectangular pot with about an 3 or 4cm of alginate and then had my son 'hover' his hand in the top of the alginate. Once set I just poured in the plaster to fill the hand mould but then kept pouring so that there was about a 1cm of thickness on top of the alginate - this is what forms your tile.
This was the result...

I wanted to offer a slightly more affordable cast in a simple frame for people who didn't want to spend out on full price cast. This fits the bill perfectly.
The down side is it is only really suitable for older children and adults who can understand that they need to keep their hand and fingers flat and hover it just in the surface of the alginate. It would be harder to do it with a baby as you wouldn't get the flat hand.
Hope this helps
Dean
