Hi, Justine.
I also offer a 'outprint' service to my customers, i did use the Alginate methood however many customers wanted multipul prints on one cast... something that isnt possible with Alginate - How do you get 2 childrens hand & foot into one mould? So i developed my own methood.
I have produced using my conatct at work (casting isnt my full time job, i'm a automotive engineer by day!) i produced a series of sized trays, with moveable baffles to custom size the prints. I then use cheap easy to get hold of "Play Doh" and roll it flat, use the tray as a cookie cutter and hey presto a tray lined with my casting material... the child then pops their hand & or foot in and hey presto a really cheap and quick methood of casting. Play doh is made with Oil, so releases from the plaster easily & relativly cleanly (if done correctly)
Fill mould with plaster...
IMPORTANT: as soon as the plaster is 80% set i.e still warm & wet... remove it from the tray. pick off the play doh, and use it as a 'rubber/blotter' to pick up the finer / small pieces.
Job done.
See my website for some examples... www.prettypottery.co.uk
Hope that helps ?
