Mikaela, the system you described can work very well, I have used it with good results myself. As you found out, properly sealing the box, having the alginate at the right consistency, and mixing enough alginate are essential. Remember, if the alginate is too runny, it will be more fragile. Also, contrary to what one might expect, the runnier the alginate, the more bubbles you will likely get. The problem is that as the alginate is still liquid, air bubbles tend to rise an cling to any vertical surface. If you have the alginate JUST runny enough to pour into the mold and fill the voids around the hands (I help this along by rubbing alginate around the hands with my hands as I fill the mold) you will have less bubbles. I suspect that with what you have learned, if you try it again carefully, the third time might be the charm.
However, I do have another method but I do not have time to describe it right now. If no one else does, I will try to do so either tonight or tomorrow.
