I have heard of alginate stored in an air tight container still being usable after ten years. I suspect that the real culprit is moisture, of course. As for stone, probable the same. I have had some alginate that was several years old and had not been properly stored go bad meaning that it just wouldn't gel and had to be discarded. Since stone is far less costly than alginate and possibly still usable for something, I probably wouldn't worry much about it.
I always use fast setting Impression Dental Plaster and cheese cloth rather than plaster bandages for the supporting molds in life casting. For a complete explanation see "An Alternative to Using Plaster Bandages..."by myself in the A.L.I. library.
