What type of plaster are you using?? there are many types that vary in hardness and set up time. Maybe you should use another material to cast these in. Plaster is good but the Forton MG product is much better and stronger. The plaster is pretty soft especially fot the delicate childrens fingers.
Dave Parvin has many great articles in the library about just these things. Read thru them and you should have some great answers to your questions.
