You bring up a excellent point. be careful if the coffin's lining. It's easier when the deceased is being cremated right after the casting.

NEW! MoldGel SILFREE. A revolutionary formula.
Made with all food-grade ingredients. It nourishes
the earth when discarded. 3-to-1 mix ratio yields
twice the volume as those 1-to-1 brands. Delayed
shrinkage for delayed casting - so creamy smooth, too.

RE: death masks:--
Dear Lidia
I have some experience of doing these casts, not death masks as such, but
casting deceased babies.
I agree with the replies so far, especially the one referring to the
reverence you need to display while doing the cast.
I always have the relatives sign a release form, like the one on the ALI
website, but with some changes to make it suitable for the work being
undertaken, and I give them this form as far in advance for them to read as
I can even if I have to email it to them. I never clean up the deceased
person, and that is mentioned on my release form, I just feel that it
disturbs them too much and could damage their skin more than just leaving it
(but then most of what I do is with babies not adults).
I also wear my "best" clothes, epically in a funeral parlour, you just have
to look at the way the funeral director dresses to see why. For normal
casting I wear jeans and a nice top, but not for deceased castings.
You will need to find a very open minded hospital to allow you onto the
premises to do this kind of work. I can't get anyone local to me to listen
to how important it could be for relatives even if I am offering the service
for free! However, I am in the UK, if you are in the US or elsewhere then
it may be a different kettle of fish.
It might be a different story if the relatives find you and ask you into the
hospital rather than you "touting for business" on the premises.
.......One thing to watch, cold increases the set time of the alginate quite a
bit. If the deceased person has been in cold storage then it could double
the set time, or more, it is worth feeling their skin before you start, and
perhaps asking how long they have been in storage (away from the relatives)
so you can get an idea about set time. A baby I cast at three weeks post
birth took over five minutes for 2min algi to set properly. It set on the
outside way way before the bits touching his skin was set.
You may also find that you are asked to wear gloves for infection control, I
always have been asked to do so and now I bring along a few pairs as once
the algi sticks to them I find it easier the change the gloves rather than
peel it off. You also need to be careful not to get algi spilling into the
coffin, if that is where they are, or make sure the lining can be turned
over or cleaned some other way before you start. Maybe if you are doing
death masks you will need more room than being in a coffin would allow
anyway?
Hope that all helps.
Regards.
Helen

deathmasks:--
hi collegues
anybody has experience, not just info but actually hands on experience
with making deathmasks?
Might be interested in offering this service to the local hospitals.
Especially neonatal (babies)
What should i know about casting a death person. I am worried about clean
up and things like that.
thanks.
