Topic Subject : Full body alginate casting |
|
I've been life casting on and off for over 20 years using plaster & gauze. I now use alginate for the hands & feet and skin safe silicone for the face / head. I then cast the hands & head in plaster to clean them & sculpt the eyes and sometimes add the sculpted hair. I then remold these parts in silicone to cast in resin. I cast the body parts in resin from the plaster molds in sections and then put the parts all together.
This process has worked fine for the most part but many times I have problem with the plaster molds and the release agents while trying to pull the resin parts. I also don't get the detail & it's uncomfortable for the model when hair is lost in the plaster.
So my question here for all the experts is has anyone successfully done a full body casting using alginate? If so, there are many questions I have about the process. How did you keep the material from running or falling off a standing model. How thick did you have to lay on the material to keep it from falling apart when removing it from the model. What did you use to cast in the mold?
Is it practical to think using alginate is a better option for a full body casting?
Thank you for any input as I'm hoping to try this next week if it makes sense.
