Topic Subject : Re: Belly casting with plaster bandage

Helen

If somebody put their hand into a pail of drain cleaner, it would be
burned, not from heat, but from a chemical action. Wet plaster does
not cause this chemical reaction. When plaster sets, it starts to
give off a release of heat. How much heat? That depends on the amount
of plaster. A pails-worth would overwhelm a child's hand. A few
layers of plaster gauze would feel slightly warm.
May I suggest this experiment: in a little pan, pour plaster so it is
about 3/4" deep. Oil up your hand. Put it into the plaster flat and
palm down so only the bottom is submerged. Just hold still. At any
time you could pull your hand up and out. Tell us how hot it felt.
