Hi Ann,
Which alginate are you using? I'm also in the UK and use the stuff from Tiranti, both regular and slow set. For the pregnancy cast of my wife I used the Tiranti slow set mixed in a ratio of 2.5 to 1 (water to alginate) by weight. I prefer to do it by weight as going by volume, you can get varying amounts of alginate depending on how compacted it is. I don't know the temperature of the water at the time but my wife recalls it being cool, although it wasn't cold enough to induce goose bumps. This gave a nice consistency that stayed in place well and the working time was just long enough (Algislo would help with a longer working time).
For that particular cast I used 2.5 litres of water and 1kg of Tiranti slow set alginate. I used every bit I could get from the bucket and probably could have done with a little more. Bear in mind that tap water in different areas could have an effect on setting times - it is worth reading Ed's article in the library section of this website "Obtaining Higher Quality Alginate Impressions" as it talks about that in detail.
I've definitely found you need a lot less water for this type of application. Using the Tiranti slow set for dipping 2 adult hands I used a ratio of 4 to 1 (water to alginate) but that would have been far too runny for the pregnancy cast. (Whilst experimenting, I actually got away with a 6 to 1 mix - it was a little on the weak side once set but I just about managed to get a cast from it. I wouldn't do it again though).
I have done a fair bit of experimenting with a few different alginates available in the UK and different ratios and so far I still prefer the stuff from Tiranti. Its slightly more expensive but I find is the easiest to work with and gives the best results.
Regards
Dean
