Just like anything you can shop around for it. Dental supplies distributors wholesalers in the yellow pages. They will aslo deliver to your door. The extra fast setting gypsum wasn't too bad in price.
This is what I have to do with alginate.
Since the water here is quite hard with calcium I put it through a brita water pitcher first then heat some of it up to mix to the right temputure. I have a thermometer to make sure it is the right temp, just 97- 100. or 37-39 c
When I mix my alginate I start out 1 to 1 ratio to get the mixture creamy otherwise it will be lumpy and will show on the cast. (because of the hard water) As I mix it, I slowly add more water to get it to the thickness I like.
I'm not sure how everyone else does it but this has been working for me.
