Thanks to all of you that sent in advice for me to follow. Lots of good tips and a lot of things I hadn't though of.
I did the cast today and what a mess
When I mixed up the alginate according to the alginate/water ratio it looked so thin so I added more alginate. I had only time to start putting on the first handfull before it set up. I tried again this time making the water a little colder as I thought that might have been part of the problem and it just seemed so thin that again I panicked and added more. I was probably on my third handful before this one started seting up.
Third try, colder water, my model said it was cool but not too cold at around 75 degrees. And I stuck to the correct alginate/water ratio. It was so thin when I started putting it onto her that it just ran every where. But even before I could really finish putting it on it started to set up again!! It was supposed to be 8-9 minutes but it certainly did not last that long. Anyway. thought it was worth a try so I continued and put on the plaster bandage.
Unfortunately when it was time to take the mould off the model it was so thin in areas that it ripped quite a bit. So.. I had read on the forum that super glue sticks alginate together (which it does) and it also sticks fingers well too!!. So I have stuck it where I could and in the places where there were holes I filled in with clay. It is now setting in my workshop and I will unveil it tommorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me!!
Thaks again everyone. I really appreciate your help
Ann
