Topic Subject : Re: Re: Underwear and alginat

Dean is absolutely correct. I have cast underwear on models MANY times. The other similar thing is to cast a dancer in a leotard of a swimmer in a Speedo. Vegetable or cooking oil works just fine. WD-40, while it would probably work, might not be the best thing for the model's skin. Use just plain generic vegetable oil such as corn oil, do not use olive oil, it will not work.

You can either soak to underwear and then have the model put them on or spray the cloth once she has put them on. Soak well but not dripping. Make sure that any oil on the skin is wiped off since alginate will not stay in place on oily skin.

Do not just pull the mold off the model as usual; the cloth may have a tendency to stick slightly to the cloth. Cut the sides of the underwear so that the underwear comes off with the mold. You may be able to unhook a bra and save it. Sometime the mold will come off leaving the underwear behind, but it is better to not chance it. For modesty, if necessary, just pull the mold out a couple of inches and have your female assistant help the model cover herself with a towel.

Very slowly pull the underwear loose from the alginate.

I do lots of portrait castings and if you have read my articles on taking castings to a higher level titled "How Do I Cast Thee, Let Me Count The Ways," a head to me if from the top to at least below the breasts and most are cast with cloth.

Please feel free to call me at my studio (303)321-1074 if I can help.

Dave
