I have been following this thread and can offer a bit of my own tried and true to the mix. I have dedicated washer and dryer specifically for use by my studio, (so mama doesn't get her panties in a twist when I use the house one for ...less than appropriate laundering techniques) Long story short... soak the garment in fabric softener until saturated, wring out excess, place in a pillowcase and throw into the dryer until hot. I refrain from using the term (dry) as it will appear to be damp, but only saturated with softener. The model then dons the garment and process the model accordingly with whatever technique you are experimenting with. NOTE: make sure the model is not hypersensitive to the softener you are using, I like using Downy as it is marketed as hyperallergenic and has never caused any issues with anyone I have ever casted even with hypersensitivity issues.
The garment will hang and flow as if it were dry and the fit is very close to its non-treated condition. removing the garment from the alginate can be tricky but with care (isn't this the artistic capability we are searching for in the first place) can be removed and re-created with awesome detail.
Have fun
