Topic Subject : Re: Hesion

Hi Mitchell
Hessian as in the sacking material of old sorry my spelling was incorrect first time around it comes in rolls its a coarse sack coloured thread in a loose weave not as tight a weave as in the sacking fabric and comes in large rolls plasterers use it and call it scrim when they used plasterboard it would layed down by plastering over the joints approx 6 inchess wide
In the fiberous plastering side of things we would bye it at a yard wide and cut it acordingly , we used to say that "WADES " ropes soaked in plaster of paris especialy the harder plasters that you could hang a small car from the ceiling it was so strong a way to fix big cast on film sets like 20ft rock cast as used on "the dark crystal" and "Greystock"
Other wise it would be cut and layed on top of the first coat of plaster the second coat would be retarded by "size" this would hold back the plaster setting as some of the bigger cast could take up to 45 minutes to fill in also using "lath"1inch wooden strips to give strength to the cast
when making full figures we often soak the canvas "hessian" first and lay it on top of the first coat its otherwise applied dry and brushed in with wet plaster
This tecnique can be applied to filling in casts for lifecasting especialy torsoes and full body cast this creates a light weight but strong cast .

NEW! MoldGel SILFREE. A revolutionary formula.
Made with all food-grade ingredients. It nourishes
the earth when discarded. 3-to-1 mix ratio yields
twice the volume as those 1-to-1 brands. Delayed
shrinkage for delayed casting - so creamy smooth, too.

Hesion:--

John,
I am a stagehand and a scenic carpenter. What is "hesion", as I have never heard of it?

Re: Re: Re: Short video clip:--
That comes as a big surprise Dan
I have always brushed in plaster on open moulds only slushing or pouring in on partialy close moulds this come from my plastering background some of my ornametal plaster work is in Buckingham palace ,these cast have a first coat of plaster then just as it stiffens a layer of scrim (hesion)is layed in and a second coat is applied all plaster cast for film sets and film props are made this way making a strong lightweight cast

Olivier

What struck me was, you put cotton wool only along the top seam but
it was good enough to anchor the plaster gauze, and later you were
able to yank the gauze away easily.
Also liked how you started the plaster by painting it in, something
I'll try.
You worked on the ground which I would find very hard compared to
working up on a table. Young knees..
