Robert, very well stated.
Diane, there are two articles in the ALI Library which you may find helpful. The first is on page 4 titled "Making Silicone Molds" by Ed McCormick which I would read first because of its thorough explanation of silicone rubbers. The second is by myself titled "How to Make Secondary Molds Part 1" which is on page one. In it I explain in detail with photographs how I make block molds of babies' hands and feet using silicone rubber. Two follow on articles cover secondary molds for faces and torsos. If I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me directly at parvinstudio@comcast.net or call me a my studio number (303) 321-1074. It has been several years since I wrote these but the information is still pretty much what I do today though I do have a couple of new little tricks which even make the molds more useful.
I have also written an additional three part article for the same publication as mine above, "Sculpture Journal" on making a somewhat more complex but very functional mold of a mother's hand holding her infant's foot. This series had not yet been added to the ALI Library but probably will be shortly. In the meantime, I would be glad to email the series to you if interested.
Good luck,
Dave
